Why did you choose Sprott Shaw College?

I chose Sprott Shaw College because it came highly recommended by a close friend, Noel, who had a fantastic experience there. Additionally, many of my friends and colleagues had graduated from Sprott Shaw and spoke very highly of the programs and the supportive learning environment. Their success stories and positive feedback made the decision easy for me. I knew that Sprott Shaw would provide the quality education and practical skills I needed to transition smoothly into my new career as an Education Assistant.

What were you doing before attending Sprott Shaw College?

Before attending Sprott Shaw College, I spent 28 years in the food industry, primarily working as a sous chef. My journey in the culinary world was incredibly rewarding and filled with diverse experiences. I had the opportunity to manage kitchens, create delicious dishes, and mentor aspiring chefs. The fast-paced environment and the joy of crafting meals that brought people together were truly fulfilling. However, I felt a calling to transition into education, where I could use my skills to support and inspire students. This led me to pursue a new path as an Education Assistant.

How was the admissions process?

The admission process was smooth and efficient. I was interviewed the same day I applied, and to my delight, I was enrolled on the spot. The staff was very welcoming and made the entire process straightforward and stress-free. Their promptness and professionalism reassured me that I had made the right choice in pursuing my education there. Shout out to Mark, Amy, and Mary.

What program did you choose and why?

I chose the Education Assistant course because I wanted to make a meaningful impact on students’ lives. After spending 28 years in the food industry as a sous chef, I realized that my passion for mentoring and supporting others could be channeled into education. The idea of helping students overcome challenges and succeed in their academic journey truly inspired me. Additionally, the positive experiences and success stories from friends who graduated from Sprott Shaw College reinforced my decision to pursue this path. I knew that becoming an Education Assistant would allow me to use my skills in a new and fulfilling way. With my patience, perseverance, and genuine love for education, I believed this path would lead me to a much more rewarding career.

What was the environment like during your time at Sprott Shaw College?

During my time at Sprott Shaw College, the environment was incredibly supportive and encouraging. The professors were always helpful and went out of their way to ensure we understood the material. The staff was equally supportive, always ready to assist with any questions or concerns. My classmates were fantastic as well; we formed a close-knit community that made the learning experience enjoyable. Although it was overwhelming at times, the positive and collaborative atmosphere made everything manageable and ultimately rewarding. A special shout-out to Professor Cheryl Graham and Mr. Callum Mulligan.

Where was your practicum or co-op and how was it?

My practicum was at Cedar Drive Elementary School and Eagle Mountain Middle School. It was a fantastic experience where I learned a lot and felt truly supported. The principals and staff at both schools were incredibly welcoming and helpful, making my transition smooth and enjoyable. The hands-on experience I gained was invaluable and reinforced my passion for working with students and supporting their educational journey, one heart at a time.

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation?

I was fortunate to find a job very quickly after graduation. I was interviewed just two days after the ceremony, and the process went smoothly from there. The manager and staff at School District 43 were incredibly supportive, making the transition into my new role seamless and stress-free. Their encouragement and assistance reassured me that I was in the right place to start my new career as an Education Assistant.

I work as an Education Assistant in School District 43. After graduation, I was offered positions at two schools for a permanent role. I chose to work at a K-5 elementary school because I love working with young minds as they develop their skills and grow. As an Education Assistant, my duties include: supporting students, classroom management, individualized support, collaboration, behavioral support, resource preparation, and communication.

I find it incredibly rewarding to work with young students and witness their growth and development. Their enthusiasm and curiosity make every day a new and exciting experience. Not to mention, having lots of nieces and nephews—since I have four brothers and five sisters—adds to my joy in working with children.

If you could give advice to someone coming to Sprott Shaw, what would you say?

If I could offer advice, I would say: “Absolutely go for it! The college provides a supportive environment with dedicated professors and hands-on learning experiences that are invaluable. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and make the most of the resources available to you. The staff and classmates are incredibly helpful, and you’ll quickly find a strong sense of community. It’s normal to feel a bit overwhelmed at times, but remember that everyone is there to help you succeed. I’m sharing this because my experience was genuinely positive, and I believe it can be the same for you. Follow your passion, embrace the journey, and enjoy every step along the way!”.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I would like to share that, for me, education is a lifelong journey with no age limits, especially for those who feel they might be too old to study or go back to school. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to learn something new later in life, it’s never too late to pursue your educational goals. Embrace the opportunity to grow, explore new passions, and expand your horizons. Remember, the desire to learn and improve is what truly matters, not your age. Education is for everyone, at every stage of life. It is the most powerful tool you can have, and no one can take it away from you. From a proud Bachelor of Science and Hotel and Restaurant Management Degree Holder to Chef Angel, and now an Education Assistant.
